3D Printed Turnout Frogs
THIS PRODUCT IS UNDER PROTOTYPE. This frog is experimental and pushing the limits of 3D printed parts on the railroad. While I believe it will prove to be a good part, testing on this part is critical before releasing the files. If you wish to purchase the files before they are available here, send me an email.
Frogs and turnout parts are another cost that may deter someone from building their own railroad in their backyard while on a budget. We will be offering frogs in #5, #6, #7 and possibly #9.
These frogs are designed to be fully 3D printed, and easily replaceable without having to take the entire turnout apart to replace the frog. PETG frogs may last for a few years, but ASA would be the optimal material to print this frog out of due to its excellent UV resistance. Id estimate a frog printed from ASA would last around 5 years. To replace, simply unscrew the old frog from the ties, and replace with a new, freshly printed frog.
Though these parts are wearable items on the railroad, I do believe the strength and longevity to be sufficient. If a frog lasts an average of 5 years, it would take approximately 50 years of filament cost to get close to the cost of buying a milled or cast frog.
If you like to tinker, and want to save some money on your railroad, this is an excellent place to start!
For now, 300X300X300 for a #7
I plan to experiment with 2 part frogs for smaller print volume. Unsure of the reliability with this method.
